I watch my website stats closely to see backlinks from submissions - and often will sign up and join sites that I've been bookmarked at, fill out a complete profile while I'm there, and vote up sites I'm fond of. Social bookmarking seems to provide more immediate traffic than Directory submission - tho not as long-lived. The two combined are VERY powerful - short and long-term!
